Standing at the Sky’s Edge (3 August)

Get the tissues ready! After three critically acclaimed sold-out runs, this emotional gut-punch of a musical is set to close at the Gillian Lyne this month. A love letter to Sheffield, Standing at the Sky’s Edge observes the changing landscape from the city's landmark housing estate, Park Hill, the famous brutalist structure “with its own wikipedia page”

Spanning three generations, the Park Hill resident’s reminisce on past lives and look towards a brighter future, as they navigate the universal themes of love, loss, and survival. The poignant production has been hailed the ‘most exciting new British musical in years,’ by WhatsOnStage, and is the recipient of the Best New Musical Olivier award, UK Theatre Award for Best Musical Production, and the South Bank Sky Art award.

Featuring music and lyrics (and show title) by renowned Sheffield singer-songwriter, Richard Hawley, and a book by award winning playwright Christ Bush. People, Places and Things (10 August)

Deniese Gough reprises her ‘career defining’ role in Duncan Macmillan’s powerful and intense play on the complexities of addiction and recovery to critical acclaim. 

An intoxicating drama on the futility of striving for truth and surviving in the modern world. Emma (Gough) is a struggling actress who stumbles through life in blacked out bliss. Now she’s in rehab, and her newfound reality is as painful as it is sobering.

Following its sold-out run at the National Theatre, the pulse-pounding production transferred to New York via London’s West End. The show picked up extra hand luggage in each of its layovers, winning the Critics Circle Theatre Award and two Oliviers, in addition to six Drama Desk and two WhatsOnStage Award nominations. The latest reincarnation has been just as highly regarded with The Independent stating ‘Denise Gough’s extraordinary performance has only got better.’ If you missed the first stints in the capital, this is your final chance to rectify it! FANGIRLS (24 August)

The vibrant and energetic Australian musical already has a legion of fangirls (and boys) itself! Filled with catchy pop songs and sharp dialogue, the hilarious tale of a girl's obsession with boy band singer, Harry, received the Matilda Award for Best Musical or Cabaret and the Sydney Theatre Award for Best Production of a Mainstage Musical. This side of the world, the show has been just as highly praised with critics calling it a ‘concert spectacular.’ 

The musical tells the story of 14-year-old Edna, a passionate fan of the fictional boy band True Connection, and her obsession with the band's lead singer. Hilariously and poignantly exploring the intensity of teenage fandom (playwright Yve Blake interviewed real life boyband devotees, as well as her own experience as a fangirl to authentically portray Edna and her gang), the show challenges stereotypes about teenage girls and celebrates their agency and enthusiasm. The show had a strict season at the Lyric Hammersmith, but with rave reviews and sensational songs, we wouldn’t be surprised to see this on the West End soon! 

 

Hallelujah! Sister Act has transcended its on-screen presence and delivered a heavenly stage show for the masses to enjoy. Based on the 1992 comedy starring Whoopi Goldberg, the joyous musical features over 20 songs and is currently making audiences roll around the pews. Deloris Van Cartier

Singer and girlfriend to gangster Curtis Shank, Deloris is as far from holy as you can get. The lounge singer has dreams of making it big but when she accidentally stumbles on her boyfriend and his cohort shooting someone, she runs to the police. As Curtis and his crew are pursuing her, Deloris is placed in a witness protection programme which happens to place her in a struggling nunnery. Despite their differences, Deloris and the sisters find common ground, and she helps them raise money and attract new parishioners by becoming the new choirmaster. 

Mother Superior

Stuck between her reservations and doing the right thing, Mother Superior begrudgingly accepts Deloris into the convent. With concerns about funding and the lack of general interest in the church, Mother Superior is constantly looking for a way to protect her sisters. Though resistant to Deloris’s new ways, she quickly sees her as one of the nuns and her protective nature extends to the outsider.

Eddie Souther

The police officer assigned to Deloris’s case, Eddie, is the good guy looking out for Deloris and the rest of her sisters. After a rocky start, Eddie and Deloris build a relationship which goes beyond the professional.

Sister Mary Robert

The youngest member of the convent, Sister Mary Robert is shy and stuck in her shell. With Deloris’s help, she discovers she has a voice… and it’s a damn good singing voice, too. With her newfound talent, she leads many of the Sister Act songs.

Sister Mary Patrick

Fun and excitable, Sister Mary Patrick has a lot of love and enthusiasm to give. One of the first to welcome Deloris into the fold, she becomes a key member of Deloris’s inner circle and choir.

Sister Mary Lazarus

A senior and seemingly grumpy member of the convent, Sister Mary Lazarus is the former choir lead. Despite a chilly start, she quickly gets on board with new plans and new friends.

Curtis Jackson/Shank

Deloris’s no-good boyfriend is nothing but bad news. After Deloris breaks up with him and witnesses his murderous deeds, he’s determined to find her and give her the same treatment as his other victim.

Adapted from the cult 90s film, Sister Act: A Divine Musical Comedy has been blessing us with its presence since its world premiere back in the year of our lord 2006. The musical broke box office records when it first opened at the Pasadena Playhouse, and has since gone on to receive six Olivier and five Tony award nominations, including an Olivier nod to Clive Rowe, who currently stars as the loveable cop, Eddie.

The heavenly production follows a talented disco diva on the run from her part-time boyfriend, and full-time mob boss, Curtis Jackson. Forced into police protection, Deloris Van Cartier finds herself stuck in a totally unfabulous convent. The West End has been blessed with a ‘heaven-sent’ (Telegraph) revival of the nunbelievably hilarious and joyful comedy, Sister Act! Who will be in the Sister Act: A Divine Musical Comedy London Cast from 10 June 2024

Following Beverly Knight’s final performance as Deloris Van Cartier on 8 June, X Factor winner Alexandra Burke will be stepping into the purple knee high boots and taking over the lead role from 10 June until the show's final West End performance on 31 August. She will be joined by fellow reality show winner Lee Mead (Any Dream Will Do, We Will Rock You), who will be taking over the role of Eddie Souther from Clive Rowe from 8 June - 31 August. 

Who will be in the Sister Act: A Divine Musical Comedy London Cast from 5 August 2024

Three cast members will be switching roles from 5 August. Lesley Joseph, who previously played Sister Mary Lazurus, will take over the role of  Mother Superior from 5 August. With Lori Haley Fox, who previously played Sister Mary Martin of Tours, taking over the role of Sister Mary Lazurus. Emma Odell will be replacing Lori Haley Fox as Sister Mary Martin of Tours. 

Oh, what’s occurring? It’s only the legendary Ruth Jones set to star as the leader of the convent, Mother Superior, in Sister Act at The Dominion Theatre! The British star will join soul sensation and Olivier Award winner Beverley Knight next year when the award-winning production of Sister Act returns to London for a limited season at the Dominion Theatre from March 2024!
